Trick to playing Necro?

Anyone got any advice on how to play the Necromancer?
I've tried a few times and can never seem to get my head round using the character. I always go somewhere along the lines of using the bone shield/defense and then use the skeletons and golems while staying back away from the main fighting. It seems to work well until Act 2 and then it always goes pear-shaped Help?

Yer same with me, i couldnt really get my head around a well equiped Necro, but i did happen to do well when i had the Golems and Mages along with Bone Spear, but i still didnt get far without running into trouble....

You have to do a lot of running. Always keep bone armor up, stay stocked with health potions. I usually kept my block maxed and then poured the rest of my stats into health. I do remember that starting off as a necro was kind of lackluster but once you get to higher levels they were one of the most fun classes in the game.
