Hello!

I picked up Diablo in 1999 or 2000 and played it heavily until around 2005 or 2006.

If you played during those years you might have known me! I mostly tooled around in the melee community, I was a prolific member of dtrades, and I ran baal runs too.

My main characters ran by the names of:
Sicyo
Asset
Morality
Promiscuity
Lovers

I also had a number of WNx tagged characters as I was a member of Warrior Nation for a long time. No more though, their interests differed than mine and I left.

Hopefully this community grows, there are a lot of other D3 communities out there to compete with but I'll do what I can to stir up some activity here.

Cheers,

Hello, everyone!

This is just a quick update to let you know that this site is not dead; however, I need some help. I have too many projects going on and do not have the necessary amount of free time available to ensure this site's success. Updates need to be made on a regular basis and though I will do what I can, I can't do it alone.

If you are interested in helping out, I encourage you to get started by simply posting around the forum (especially in the Diablo 3 section). Members who make positive/quality contributions will be considered for Moderator/Staff positions at a later date and may even be given special forum status/awards.

I'm looking forward to your participation.

Thanks.

Wired recently interviewed Rob Pardo who confirmed that Diablo 3 will feature the anti-hacking software from World of Warcraft known as Warden, except it will be adapted specifically for Diablo 3.

Quote:Wired: Speaking of it being online, with Diablo II and the first Diablo, really quickly after the game was released and, again, after every patch, there is this huge amount of people who hack the game, find ways to work around the system. What are you guys doing in Diablo III to prevent that? Obviously that makes playing less fun for people who aren’t cheating.

Pardo: With online games it’s definitely challenging to keep people from modifying the game, or hacking the game, but it’s something we take very seriously. It’s something that, you look at a lot of our efforts in our other games and -- we have a full-blown Hacks Team now at Blizzard -- we’ve developed our own kinda anti-hack software called “Warden” which we use in World of Warcraft to try to detect a whole variety of known hacks. We’ve put technology in all of our games to help with a whole variety of those sort of hacks and to detect those sort of things. We keep it pretty serious.

There’s nothing specific that we're doing just for Diablo III, it’s kinda more of a Blizzard effort to prevent cheating across the board.

Wired: Is it going to be the exact same “Warden” software in Diablo III as in World of Warcraft?

Pardo: It will be adapted, but it’s something that was made for all of our games.

Wired: Along with that, there’s a huge segment of the fanbase and a huge segment of the media who came down on EA recently when they released Spore and it had that ridiculous DRM system that only allowed you to put it on three computers. There was a huge uproar. Obviously you need some kind of DRM otherwise people would just blatantly pirate your game over and over again. What kind of solutions are you guys looking at for Diablo III?

Pardo: The thing that I think helps us, is that since our games have such a huge multiplayer component, Battle.net really is our most effective DRM.

If you wanna play online on Battle.net with other players you’re going to have to have a legitimate copy. That’s really kinda been the thing that’s always saved us from a lot of the PC piracy that I think hurts a lot of other single-player-only games.

Personally, this news makes me very happy. Cheating in online games--whether it be duping/third-party programs/maphacks/etc.--is something I despise. I play 100% legit and, in an ideal world, would like to see everyone else do the same.

Abd al-Hazir Wrote:Owing to my lack of tolerance for those who would use magic towards their own nefarious ends, many have assumed that I am averse to the practice of the magical arts on a philosophical level. Nothing could be farther from the truth. My quarrel is with those sorcerers who dismiss the ancient traditions and teachings – teachings that have been honed over millennia in order to preserve respect for authority and the rule of law.

Recently the youth of Caldeum have fallen prey to the overblown stories of just such a delinquent wizard. That is correct: I used the uncouth term wizard, not sorcerer. It seems that even the title of a civilized magic wielder is too restrictive for this young upstart. Through my contacts at the Yshari Sanctum of the mage clans, I am one of the few who actually know the truth behind the rumors now sweeping our streets regarding this hellion who flaunts her magic irresponsibly.

This wizard was sent here to spend her formative years under the tutelage of the best mages in the world. Well, it seems they neglected to teach our wizard manners on her native island of Xiansai, for she was a rude and uncooperative student from the very beginning. Originally under the guidance of the Zann Esu mage clan, she was eventually handed over to the Vizjerei in the hopes that their strict and unbending discipline would break her anarchic spirit. Yet even the esteemed Vizjerei instructors were unable to rein her in. She was continually being caught seeking out dangerous and forbidden magics, heedless of the consequences to herself or anyone around her.

Although there is no truth to the tales that she actually ventured into the infamous Bitter Depths below the Sanctum, she was caught in the Ancient Repositories, where the most dangerous incantations are housed for the safety of the public. When confronted by the great Vizjerei mage Valthek and demanded to account for herself, she brazenly attacked him rather than face the punishment merited by her acts. Exaggerated stories of the battle are already being inflated to mythic proportions by the more rebellious of our city's youth, but suffice it to say that she did not actually best Yshari's most powerful mage in single, honorable combat. The details of the encounter remain unclear, as Valthek has yet to regain consciousness, but it has been verified by reliable sources that she relied on trickery and deceit to bring the great man low. I have also been assured that the extensive property damage was chiefly the result of Valthek's magical prowess, not the upstart wizard's. As to where she is now, no one rightly knows, for she fled the city immediately after the encounter.

It is not my goal to alarm, but I find this situation disturbing. We now have a rebellious wizard, young and inexperienced, wandering the world, dabbling in powerful magics she does not understand. Those wiser than you or I determined long ago that certain schools of magic were too dangerous and forbade their practice. It is those magics that this wizard seems determined to explore – magics centered on manipulating the primal forces from which reality is constructed. Imagine, a headstrong nineteen-year-old youth, able to warp time itself to her will! The thought is truly terrifying. It is my honest hope that this self-styled wizard chooses never to return to Caldeum.

What i found that was most important about a HC character was that you needed a Stratagy that worked and worked well. What i would do is go around with a none-HC character and play like it was HC, be really conservative and more concious about what i was going to fight first, how i was going to fight them, where i was going to fight them and who was i going to fight next. Thinking ahead if you know what your up against is the best way to stay out of trouble and avoid getting into tight spots. Another thing to have is a good escape plan or path, if you couldnt escape from a tight spot then you would most likely die, the easiest way to get out of those tight spots was to open a town portal and step through...
Once i had finished the game with a none-HC character acting like a HC character i would then go off and play a HC character using the Stratagy and escape plans i had foundout that worked best...

If the developers are telling us that the game is much more deeper than any of the previous games, meaning more quests more items etc etc, im begining to think that they will steer away from Normal, Nightmare and Hell modes...

I personally would love them to include it as it brought greater difficulties to playing the game (for obvious reasons). Having a legit character bring more excitment to the game and adding the difficulty levels only hightened the experience.

What is the best new TV show this fall? Or best show you just started watching?

I've seen the first episode of Fringe and have the other episodes on Tivo. It's a new show created by JJ Abrams (the Lost guy). I've fallen behind in my TV watching since I was working on a big proposal that kept me WAY to busy. The first episode of Fringe was really good. I enjoyed it a lot. I like the crazy scientist guy the best. He's a very funny character. And Joshua Jackson (a Mighty Duck all grown up) is really good too. Not sure about the girl yet, we'll see.

Anyone else watching the Fringe? Any other good new shows out there?

I have Diablo 2 and the expansion pack but haven't started playing yet. Can anyone recommend a good starter character? I tend to like the kind of characters in other games where you have a good strong sword, axe or the like and swing away at all the bad guys. But spells and such can also be cool.

Any good suggestions for how to start my first game?
Thanks!

Non-existent Death Penalties?

Obviously nothing is certain at this point, but Bashiok has touched on the subject of death penalties a bit:

Bashiok Wrote:Before I get in to what we are doing let me go over some things we want to avoid with a death mechanic.

We want to separate being in town and being out on a quest/adventure/dungeon as much as possible. Leaving the safety of a town should not be a decision you take lightly. We don't want to remove the sense of suspense and danger by making town something you're always going back to pretty much whenever you like. The intent is to create a greater separation from being in town, and not, and to make your time away from town a lot more tense.

On that same note we also don't want to remove the player from the action. Throwing them back to town for every death really breaks up the action, and not in a fun, interesting, or necessary way.

So, with these things in mind we've found that a check point system works really well. Throughout your adventures, and generally at the ends of each "floor" of a dungeon your character is saved to a checkpoint. When you die you're dropped back at the last checkpoint with a small amount of health, and the rest regenerates slowly. It's obviously a very forgiving system as it is. It's just too early to put a ton of thought in to what penalties there should be, if any, added on top of it.

Regardless, potential penalties aside, this is the death mechanic we're currently using and it's working really well so far.

Regarding Diablo 3's improvement of the drop system and having to hold the ALT key to see the name of the loot that's been dropped:

Bashiok Wrote:The way it works now is that when an item drops the name shows for about 5 seconds and then they fade out and disappear. Pressing Alt shows all dropped item names for again about 5 seconds and then the names fade out and disappear.

I actually didn't like it at first, I liked the on/off state of pressing or not pressing Alt, but with the names showing immediately after drop and having a sort of "grace period" after just tapping Alt, it's really grown on me and is a lot more intuitive. It's a lot easier to see what just dropped quickly and decide if you care, and it isn't necessary to constantly hold down Alt while scavenging after a large fight.

I still want to see -nopickup return but I haven't really asked anyone what the possibility of that is. I don't think it would work well with the current system, so options may have to be a possibility.
